What Does Your Check Engine Light Mean?

October 12, 2022

A check engine light appears on the dashboard if the car's onboard diagnostic system (OBD) detects a malfunction. A flashing light indicates that the problem is serious and that you'll need to take your car to the car repair garage right away. A minor issue, such as a loose gas cap, can trigger the light. On the other hand, malfunctioning engine parts will also cause the light to turn on. Ignoring the light for a long time can be dangerous. Around $250 billion is lost annually in the U.S. because of vehicle accidents, according to the National Safety Council. Don't be a part of that statistic; a mechanic, with the help of a code reader, will be able to tell what's wrong with your vehicle.

The following are triggers for the check engine light to come on:

Oxygen Sensor

Faulty oxygen sensors are a common cause of the engine light coming on. These ensure the engine burns the right amount of fuel. Over time, a sensor can get covered in oil ash, reducing its ability to correctly monitor the system. Faulty oxygen sensors should be replaced as soon as possible.

Faulty Gas Caps

A loose gas cap is a common trigger for the check engine light to come on. A loose gas cap causes fuel vapors to escape which reduces your car's fuel economy. Loose gas caps can also allow dirt and other contaminants to come into the gas tank, which will cause bigger problems. Be sure to close the gas cap properly after fueling.

Faulty Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are necessary to light the combustion that's needed to start the car. Worn-out spark plugs will cause the check engine light to come on. Spark plugs should be changed every 30,000 to 90,000 miles.

Catalytic Converter

These reduce harmful emissions by converting carbon monoxide and other harmful fumes into harmless compounds. Get it checked if you notice reduced fuel efficiency and weird smells, then take your car to the car repair garage.

Don't ignore the check engine light. If it persists, take the car to the car repair garage to have it checked. If it's flashing, take it immediately to avoid any more damage to the car and for your safety. Bring your car to Twin Ports Diesel & Auto and we can help you avoid major car problems.
